New Date for East Bay Anglers' Fishing Expo: January 30, 2011

Club re-schedules 26th annual event to avoid NFL play dates

Mike Laptew and David Pickering will present new shows

The 26th Annual Fishing Expo sponsored by the East Bay Anglers will be held at the end of January rather than earlier in the month as in previous years, according to club Skipper Mike Gillis.

"We chose Sunday, January 30 to avoid conflict with NFL football games," Gillis explained, "and we've moved show time up to start an hour earlier at 1:00 PM."

The annual event typically draws 500 anglers from southern New England to the Barrington High School for audio visual presentations by noted fishing experts. The 2011 show features Mike Laptew and David Pickering -- both renowned striped bass anglers and audio visual presenters.

Gillis urges anglers and their families to check the club's web site -- www.rifishshow.com -- to download brochures and to buy the $15 admission tickets through PayPal. "Show tickets make great Christmas gifts," he said, "and we give $2 discounts on all tickets bought before New Year's Day."  Tickets can also be bought by check from East Bay Anglers, Box 293, Barrington, RI 02806.  They are not sold at the door.

"The show schedule has been moved up an hour earlier," Gillis explained, "to give anglers more time to shop the Expo flea market.  Many anglers cover the cost of admission through savings on fishing gear bought at the flea market which opens to shoppers at 11:00 AM."

"Show technology evolves rapidly," according to the fishing club Skipper.  "Both presenters have made major investments in new cameras and software to create their shows while the high school has just been renovated with the latest equipment for superior presentation."

"Pickering and Laptew are both extraordinary anglers," said Skipper Gillis. "Pickering has landed more than 50,000 stripers during his career from nearly every bay and beach in Southern New England.  He has created an entirely new show to share the secrets he's learned in the process.  Laptew is renowned as the 'diving fisherman' who brings a “fish-Eye perspective” to underwater action.  He has acquired unique fame as a free diver whose bubble-free diving method enables him to capture underwater views of striper life never before seen.

"Another reason for the ongoing popularity of our annual fishermen's Winter Expo," Gillis explained, "is the prize-rich raffle which offers the audience more than 100 prizes.  The 2011 show will run its raffle during the intermission rather than at the end of the show.  We've also seen the Expo expand in popularity over the years with remarkable mid-Winter bargains in fishing tackle available from a dozen vendors. The flea market opens at 11:00 AM to give vendors and shoppers more time with one another."

The annual East Bay Angler event also has several side benefits, according to Skipper Gillis.  "The food concession operated by parents of music students earns several hundred dollars for that department; a $500 scholarship is presented to a local college-bound student; a major donation is made to sustain the Rhode Island Saltwater Anglers 'Take-A-Kid-Fishing' program; and contributions are made to Save The Bay and to the Penikese Island youth program sponsored by On The Water Magazine."

Doors open at the high school at 11:00 AM, and the presentations begin at l:00 PM.  Further information is available from Will Barbeau at 401-245-8375, or from the club web site: www.rifishshow.com.
